Who needs to fill out TD1AB?
TD1AB is the Alberta Personal Tax Credits Return. You fill it out if you work in Alberta, or receive a pension and live there, and you're starting a new job or your situation has changed. Your employer uses it with your federal TD1 to work out how much Alberta income tax to deduct from each pay.
What's new and specific to TD1AB for 2026
- Alberta has the highest provincial basic personal amount in Canada: $22,769 for 2026, up from $22,323.
- TD1AB has two separate caregiver lines: line 7 for an infirm relative who lives with you, and line 8 for infirm dependants 18 or older. Each is up to $13,180.
- The pension income amount on TD1AB goes up to $1,753, compared with $2,000 on the federal form.

Common mistakes
- Claiming the basic personal amount with two employers at the same time. You can only claim your credits once. On the second job, tick the “more than one employer” box and enter 0, or you'll owe tax in April.
- Using the spouse's gross pay instead of their net income for the spouse amount.
- Keeping an old TD1 after your situation changes. Fill out a new one when you get a new dependant, separate, turn 65 or start a pension.
- Forgetting the provincial form. If you only hand in the federal TD1, your employer uses the provincial basic amount and nothing else.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 2026 Alberta basic personal amount?
$22,769. Every person employed in Alberta, and every pensioner living there, can claim it on line 1 of TD1AB.
Do I need to fill out TD1AB?
You need it if your federal total claim (line 13 of the TD1) is more than $16,452, or if you claim any Alberta amount besides the basic one. If you don't fill it out, your employer deducts Alberta tax using only the basic personal amount.
Who do I give TD1AB to?
Your employer or payer, along with your federal TD1. Don't send it to the CRA. Keep a copy for yourself.
Can I claim the basic amount with two employers?
No. Claim your credits with one employer only. On the other TD1s, tick the “more than one employer” box and enter 0 as your total.
